Episcopal Life has a place in our communication strategy,
but it is a changing place

Letters to the Editor
April 2008

The Presiding Bishop responded to a letter signed by The Record editor and five other former presidents of the Episcopal Communicators who wrote to express concern over the direction of Episcopal Life.

Short comments (signed) to letters will be published below the letter.

Letter to The Editor

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your letter, which arrived while I was out of the office. I am aware that some response has already been made to the issues detailed in your letter. Be assured that the matter of communications is the subject of ongoing conversation and strategizing at the Church Center, and that your concerns will be addressed in a timely manner.

I understand your concerns about the newspaper, Episcopal Life, and I sense that you are aware of the changing nature of print media as a primary communications tool. You yourselves note that 250,000 households may be reached in this way, yet this is only a relatively small fraction of the total number of Episcopalians. Most Americans (let alone Taiwanese, Honduran, Columbian, Haitian, Ecuadoran, Venezuelan, Guamanian, Puerto Rican, Virgin Island, Dominican, French, German, Belgian, or Italian Episcopalians) do not receive the bulk of their news through English-language print media. Episcopal Life has a place in our communication strategy, but it is a changing place. It could and should be an excellent medium for thought pieces and news items that are not immediate or short-term, and material which could be better supported by the lengthy production cycle.

I am glad to see your concern for augmented electronic communication, and assure you that we seek to provide as close to cutting edge services in that medium as possible. That concern underlies at least a portion of our reorganization.

I give thanks for your concern, and trust that you will continue to constructively support the efforts of this whole body called The Episcopal Church.

I remain

Your servant in Christ,

Katharine Jefferts Schori
